The summer of 1966 would prove to be a busy one for the PHL. It began with the unveiling of two new expansion teams, the Minnesota Lumberjacks, and the Winnipeg Pioneers. The teams unveiled their new looks on June 1, 1966.
Minnesota will wear Blue and Green uniforms to represent lakes and forest. The logo is a basic saw blade in blue and white with a green puck at the center.
Winnipeg's logo is a stylized "P" in Brown and Red with a "tail" meant to resemble a coonskin hat. The sweaters carry a similar design on the sleeves.
Expansion Draft:
On June 4, 1966, Ed Norman officially retired and Alan Garcia was introduced as the The PHL's third league president. Garcia is a 43-year-old lawyer from Toronto who began working as an apprentice under Norman during the 1964-65 season. Garcia promised there will be big changes made before the end of the decade. Perhaps the biggest thing Garcia plans to implement is an annual league-wide amateur draft, which has already been used in the Professional Football League for the last five seasons. Garcia promises that this will forever change the way PHL clubs are managed. Garcia has also promised to begin peace talks with the rival GHL, hinting that the goal of such talks could be a possible merger in the future or at least some kind of partnership.
The first order of business in Garcia's tenure, however, was the 1966 PHL expansion draft, held June 25. Minnesota was awarded the first pick. Here are the results of the draft:
